What are Risk & Protective Factors?

Risk factors are defined as characteristics at the biological, psychological, family, community, or cultural level that precede and are associated with a higher likelihood of negative outcomes--such as an event that leads to the development of various mental health struggles.

Protective factors are characteristics associated with a lower likelihood of negative outcomes or that reduce a risk factor’s impact. Protective factors may be seen as positive countering events.

Factors Behind our Focus

After some thought about the specific risk and protective factors we would integrate into our mission, we decided that psychosocial stressors would be the most appropriate risk factor to address. This decision was based on its broad applicability to a wide range of mental health struggles and its relevance to the diverse experiences of our target population. Psychosocial stressors encompass many of the underlying challenges that contribute to mental health issues, including social isolation, academic pressure, family conflict, and adverse experiences. By focusing on this umbrella term, we ensure that our interventions can address not just one specific issue but the interconnected web of factors that influence mental well-being. This approach allows us the flexibility to tailor our efforts to the unique needs of our community while maintaining a comprehensive perspective on mental health promotion. Furthermore, addressing psychosocial stressors provides a foundation for building on our chosen protective factors: mindfulness, resilience, support, and healthy coping mechanisms, which are critical for reducing the impact of these stressors over time.

Protection

Mindfulness

Mindfulness (as reflected in our name) was chosen as a protective factor because it equips individuals with the ability to stay present and manage stress effectively. By fostering awareness of their thoughts and emotions, mindfulness helps people respond to challenges in a calm and constructive way, reducing the impact of psychosocial stressors. Research has shown that mindfulness practices can improve emotional regulation, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall mental well-being, making it a powerful tool for prevention.

Resilience

Resilience was selected because it is the capacity to recover and adapt in the face of adversity. Building resilience allows individuals to better handle psychosocial stressors by developing problem-solving skills, emotional strength, and a positive outlook. Resilient individuals are less likely to experience lasting negative effects from stress and are more likely to thrive even in difficult circumstances. It’s a foundational protective factor that supports long-term mental health and well-being.

Support

Support, whether from family, peers, or community, is a crucial protective factor as it provides individuals with a sense of connection and belonging. Having supportive relationships acts as a buffer against psychosocial stressors by reducing feelings of isolation and increasing access to help when needed. Support systems foster emotional security and provide practical assistance, making it easier to navigate challenges and maintain mental health.

Healthy coping mechanisms were chosen because they empower individuals to manage stress and emotions constructively. Whether through physical activity, creative outlets, or relaxation techniques, these strategies reduce the likelihood of turning to harmful behaviors such as substance use or self-harm. By promoting healthy ways to handle life’s challenges, we equip individuals with the tools they need to face psychosocial stressors while protecting their mental and emotional health.
